MN - Redwood Park
Video features a custom Landscape Structures Twenty Leagues Under the Sea themed playground installation at Redwood Park in Apple Valley Minnesota.
0:00 — The video opens with a brief fade-in from a solid black frame. A man narrates the process of building and choosing the theme of the playground. Full shot of the entire playground incorporated into a slight hill side. Children play on a guard tower, light house, and kraken structures. View past the guard tower structure with the lighthouse tower in the background.
0:00 — "The, the idea of an inclusive playground is really important to the city of Apple Valley. They don't have one within the city. Um, so we began to look at how that could be incorporated in it. But we looked at the playground for more than just its playability and kind of tried to create this iconic idea of what a playground could become."
0:06 — A man wearing a white shirt speaks about the playground. White text appears left screen reading “Terry Minarik, Principal of Confluence, Minneapolis, MN”.
0:12 — A young boy walks across a belted path of a small bridge. A girl tries to walk across a suspended horizontal rope between designed large ocean buoys. Children walk towards the light house structure and from other play structures on the playground.
0:14 — ”And then thinking about the pool and the aquatic center, the tier, we began to look at this idea of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and how that could be incorporated into a playground. So, working with LSI, it was pretty, pretty exciting to begin to look at the different ideas. We started with a sketch. We started with this concept of this giant octopus kraken kind of thing and how it could be fit in and, and the playability of that, and LSI just took it to the next level. “
0:18 — Full elevated panning view left to right of children playing all over the playground. A boy rides down a large orange slide away from the camera. Full elevated view of a wave shaped play structure with rope climbers and geometric hand holds. View up past one of the Kraken tentacles or a boy in his wheelchair rocking back and forth excitedly inside the Kraken’s head. Rotating elevated view around the entire Kraken structure. A boy in his motorized wheelchair spins around to see more of the inside head play area of the Kraken structure. Children climb on cargo nets and other ropes inside the Kraken’s head. Girl slides down a large slide inside the Kraken’s head.
0:36 — ”Not only making tentacles on the kraken, but making them playable, making them interactive, and a variety of themes and opportunities for what you could be able to do in the park, and, and that's kind of where this came from.”
0:36 — Girl swings from hand hold monkey bars from an arched tentacle. A girl climbs up one of the Kraken tentacles and begins to crawl inside. A boy rides down a slide incorporated into one of the tentacles. Scene switches back to Terry as he finishing speaking.
0:46 — a mother pushes the outside of an inclusive merry go round as children inside ride. A second narrator begins to speak.
0:47 — This inclusive playground's really gonna provide the community with an opportunity to, to get out and play, and those with disabilities who may have been closed out of opportunities at other parks that we have in town are gonna be able to come here, and they're gonna be able to play with their brothers or sisters or their neighbors or their parents.
0:48 — Camera ducks down to look inside a domed climber where a boy and girl hide. Full view of the guard tower structure. Man in a grey collared shirt speaks to the camera. White text to the right reads “Eric Carlson, Park & Recreation Director, City of Apple Valley, MN”.
0:48 — A mother sits across from her son in a dual seat swing as her son’s wheelchair sits off to the side. A young girl walks across pod steppers to a main structure. A boy looks through a telescope up inside the light house play structure.
1:02 —" This is gonna open that up for everyone in the, in our community so that they can play together. I mean, it's gonna be a gathering spot for people in the community, and it's definitely gonna draw people from outside of our community, which will in turn hopefully help support some of our local businesses as well.”
1:04 — View of boys crouched inside and underneath the Kraken structure. Slow panning away view of a boy smiling and waving from the inside of the Kraken head through a large bubble window designed as the Kraken’s eye. Quick jump back to Eric as he finishes talking. Full elevated view of children playing on the Redwood Park playground. Screen jumps to white and the Landscape Structures logo appears with a plus sign next to it and the Flagship Recreations logo to the right. Video ends.

The playground at Redwood Park in Apple Valley, Minn., is home to an extraordinary creature: a giant Kraken seemingly rising from beneath the earth, ready to unleash a world of adventure.
Constructed from stainless steel perforated geometric tiles, the Kraken has an abstract, almost puzzle-like quality, with each piece coming together to create the fluid form of a creature caught in motion. Children can climb inside its enormous head and peer through convex glass eyes, while each of its eight legs presents a new challenge. A wavy slide, rubberized climbing belt and pod rope bridge are just a few of the ways to navigate this fantastical cephalopod.
Beyond the Kraken, oceanic waves of climbing adventures invite children to move up, down and across the playground. An adjacent Quantis® cable net climber and custom buoy and Hillscape climbers create a winding route through the space, where hidden features like an Oodle® Swing are fun discoveries.
A custom lighthouse tower rises above the playground, giving children a chance to climb high, take in the view and choose their own way down via a slide or hemisphere climber. Nearby, a custom lifeguard station fuels imaginative play, while a Cozy Dome® representing a sandy hill offers a quieter place to pause and recharge.
Inclusive and freestanding play opportunities round out the adventure, with a wheelchair-accessible We-Go-Round®, Chill® Spinner, Saddle Spinner and Friendship® Swing creating opportunities for shared or individual motion fun. At Redwood Park, every path leads to unexpected surprises.
