Development of Play: How the Playground Supports Play Skill Acquisition

Designing Inclusive Playgrounds that Foster Every Child’s Development
Playgrounds are more than just fun. They’re vital environments for children to build physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills. But for many kids, especially those with developmental differences, outdoor play spaces can feel overwhelming. This can lead to missed opportunities for connection, growth and play skill development. In this Learning Academy session, we’ll explore how playground design directly influences play skill acquisition and supports child development. Playground planners will gain insight into common pediatric diagnoses and how each can impact a child’s ability to participate in play.
We are authorized to provide .1 CEUs, 1 LUs and 1 PDHs, which meet Health, Safety and Welfare credits. We also offer AIA credit including nano units. After this 60-minute Learning Academy session, you’ll have an understanding of the following learning objectives:
- Identify the appropriate stages of play/skills developed in play
- Define how Occupational Therapists play a role in play skill development
- Identify specific playground features and how they speak to the needs of a variety of common pediatric medical diagnoses
