Parents around the nation are trying to come up with new and fun ways to get their youngsters to engage in
natural play this summer. Taking the kids to the park to use
commercial playground equipment, going swimming in a lake, ocean or pool and going to amusement parks to ride roller coasters are all great ways to entertain children outdoors. There is also a much simpler activity to try, North Potomac Patch reports.
Fishing is an easy way to keep kids engaged in the great outdoors while spending time together as a family. Fishing may seem like it comes with a lot of expenses - bait, rods and more - but there are cost-efficient ways to fish as well.
Purchasing a simple bamboo rod from a local outdoor equipment shop is an inexpensive way to go. Most sell for around $5 and come with the rod, line, bobber and a hook. Once you have the rod set up, it's time to move onto bait. Many fish will eat foods found right in your home, so raid the fridge for cheese, chunks of hot dogs or even gummy bears to reel in a fish.
Finally, find a local fishing hot spot and encourage the kids to try their luck at catching a big one. Pack a few other activities such as a frisbee or a football to get them moving while waiting for a bite.
Participating in fun activities like fishing can help
healthy kids get in the 60 minutes of daily activity as recommended by the Let's Move! initiative.
