Roberto Clemente Park

Roberto Clemente Park, Carolina, Puerto Rico

The local Miracle League in Carolina, Puerto Rico, wanted to create a baseball complex, complete with a beyond accessible playground. Their hope was that the community could utilize the complex every day, not only during the weekly baseball games.

The Mayor of Carolina worked with The Miracle League to put together a committee, headed by the parks and recreation department, to bring the baseball complex to fruition. Because Landscape Structures is the official playground partner of The Miracle League, the committee contacted their local representative, Parkesol, to start planning the beyond accessible playground.

The landscape architect working with the playground committee specified four beyond accessible PlayBooster® playstructures for children 2- to 12-years-old. Following several revisions and further customization to meet the customers’ needs, the order was placed.

After 18 months of planning and construction, a 15,000 square-foot Miracle League baseball field and 20,000 square-foot beyond accessible playground opened in Carolina, Puerto Rico. There are four ramp-accessible PlayBooster® playstructures included in the playground. Various play components including custom play panels, overhead events, Rollerslides and a Sway Fun® glider were incorporated to provide play opportunities for all abilities.

The Miracle League, in partnership with Landscape Structures, hosted a grand opening at Roberto Clemente Park, and celebrated the new recreational offering for children of all abilities. The grand opening, held in October 2008, was attended by more than 200 community members, parents and children, including six baseball teams playing in The Miracle League. The Mayor of Carolina congratulated the city on being the first in Latin America to bring a Miracle League to their community. Following the mayor’s speech, Diane Alford, director of The Miracle League, threw out the first pitch in the new field and the winner of Puerto Rican Idol sang.
